Re: PAC Masters Std course map

Elizabeth,

If you are to set up the segment of this course starting from #11, you should include the teeter (#17), as it is not just getting the jump #16, but taking  it at such an angle and with enough speed suitable to execute the teeter, that is the challenge of this sequence.

Re: PAC Masters Std course analysis

Wendy,

Thanks for going through all the trouble of recreating the course map in CRCD. It is a great example for all the students to see what kind of challenges are expected from you and your dog in the Masters Standard class.

This type of courses is fairly common at the masters level. They call for very high level of teamwork, skill and independent thinking on behalf of both the dog and the handler. These are the courses which, if your dog has any kind of speed, you can't just "handle through".. because you can't get there, ;-)..

Here is a short list of skills mandatory to competetively run such a course:

- ability of the dog to go out to a jump off a contact while the handler is running the opposite direction (#3 to #4 and #10 to #12);

- ability of the dog to wrap a jump at high speed (#6 to #7);

- ability of the handler to sprint 80'.. ahh.. more like 100' if your dog runs the dogwalk contact.. (#7 through #11);

- ability of the dog to find and enter the weavepoles out of a straight tunnel on a voice cue only (#12 to #13).

Wendy was mentioning that she (and others, I assume) was striving for a tight turn out of the #12 tunnel.. so here comes the next item of necessary skills:

- ability to set your priorities straight (#12 to #13, #14 to #15, #15 to #16), i.e.: who cares what kind of a turn you get, just get into the weaves, into the tunnel, over the jump.. and you will already be ahead of 50% of the class that got a whistle in this area of the course.. oops!, ;-)..

- ability of the dog to finish the weaves while the handler is running away and to the side (#13 to #14);

- either "special" ability of the handler to execute sequence #13 through #16 as a serpentine with the FX after #14 and the dog on your left into the chute and over #16 (requires a fast running handler with lots of guts, lol);

- or "special" ability of the dog not to lose their head in the chute, exit straight and take a voice cue to seek a jump (#16) to the left and turn right on landing;

- ability of handler not to trip over tunnels, ;-)..

- and last but not least, for both dog and handler to hang in there till they are past the finish line.. and please don't take the tire with you..

Re: PAC Masters Std course map - updated!

Got a chance to rerun this course yesterday and ended up with a very good run.

Here's what I changed:

At # 4 did a f/c instead of a post turn.  Then did a r/c before #6 jump to the tunnel # 7.  Managed to run ahead more to get in f/c at the jump # 11 after the dw and stopped moving before she jumped so that bar didn't come down.  Called left weave earlier and got a good turn and entry to the weaves with no offcourse jump.  Also found that after the weaves, it was better to layer the straight tunnel to get the jump # 14 into the chute.  This made it much easier to get the jump #16 before the teeter and I was able to get a nice rear cross there.

 A f/c before the chute did NOT work no matter what I tried, even with Xena.

If only it went that well the first time, especially at trials!

Re: PAC Masters Std course map - updated!

Wendy,

As you and Phoenix become a real team, things WILL go well the first time, and at trials.. You can quote me on that.

It's great that you had a chance to run the course again and make all the improvements and try all the handling solutions. That's how you get better. If a course had you stymied, go out of your way to set it up and tackle the difficulties until you own 'em.

No video though?

P.S.: To all students: this is a great challenge to set up and try solving. Please watch Wendy run it at the trial and read my course analysis before attempting it. Good luck. You'll learn a ton..

Olga.
