Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Becky Walton's picture

This past weekend Freddie and I were entered at West Valley Dog Sports' USDAA trial. It was raining, but fortunately it was held at an under cover equestrian facility. I think this was our 4th USDAA trial, the first we've been entered in since October. It was quite a memorable experience, for lots of reasons....in addition to Freddie, I brought Gus so he could hang out. It was great...Gus was quite the mayor, barking, smiling (all teeth) and wooo wooing at everyone he knows (he remembers people most.....if he ever met you, you are his next best friend...).

Saturday night all 4 of us (me, Matt, Gus & Freddie) went to Anaheim to see Billy Joel in concert (well, the 2 boys had to stay in the car...), and it was fantastic! We stayed at a local motel, and needless to say, Sunday I was a bit tired, but it was well worth it!

Okay...the trial.....finally, I met Jean! It was fantastic to watch her and Bailey. What a great team they are! Video just doesn't do justice to the real thing.

Yang and Olga were on their game, and had a GREAT weekend, as did Gina and Tim.

As for me and Freddie, I was very happy with how things went. It wasn't all roses by any means, but so many good things happened in our runs....

Although Freddie had previously earned his AD, I had decided to keep him in Starters games until he earns his titles in each. The reason for this was to gain ring experience (not just for him, but for both of us, since it has been a couple of years for me, too). This weekend he did so in Pairs, Gamblers and Jumpers. He also earned his 2nd Snookers leg, so one more to go on that. He got his first Q in Advanced Standard on Saturday (I have to mention that we placed 2nd behind Gina & Tim, whose time was 9 SECONDS faster than ours...YIKES! That is an absolute ETERNITY in agility! What the heck were we doing in those 9 seconds????? Way to go Gina & Tim!!!). We were also entered in Steeplecchase and Grand Prix. Although we didn't qualify in either, I was really happy with the runs.

One really interesting thing...this venue has a metal roof. Saturday morning everything seemed to be just fine, but when I brought Freddie to the ring for our first run (Advanced Standard), his ears layed back, and he broke his start as soon as I left his side (no WAY are you leaving me, mom!). I realized that the echoes of the venue were something he wasn't used to, and so I spent quite a bit of time with him in the ring area over the course of the weekend, to acclimate him to the sounds. He got better with each run, and by the end of the weekend, he seemed to pretty much ignore it. This was a huge lesson to me...I need to be more observant about the surroundings and how they might be affecting him.

The thing I'm happiest about was the enthusiasm that Freddie showed throughout the trial. He had 8 runs over the 2 days, and he came to each one with great cheer, ready to go. He was as enthusiastic in his last run, as he was in his first run.

In the end, Freddie earned 5 Q's out of his 6 regular classes, with 2 first places, a second, third and fourth. I know this is unusual for a single trial, and have no illusions that this will be typical. But I am VERY proud of my little guy, and the trust he has in me. It feels like we are really starting to come together as a team, and it is a TOTAL blast.

Most of our runs are up on Eric's website. I just looked at them, and it's funny...when I watched the first time, my initial thought was that it FELT faster than it looked (I wonder if that is just me, or if that is normal???). Then I watched again, and put my head back in the place it was during the runs. In doing so, I realize that we are coming along just fine.

Re: Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Becky .. I think I know just what you mean about thinking that the run felt faster ......  When I release Wisp off the start line I get this feeling that if I don't haul butt that I will be run over ... makes everything at that point feel pdfast!

Re: Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Becky,

I totally know what you mean. I look at the video of Phoenix and she doesn't look as fast to me as other dogs.  Video always seems to look slower than watching a dog live or sometimes running one ;-).

Congrats to you and Freddie, doesn't your aussie run anymore?  You may find now that you have Freddie that he may run better as he won't feel as much pressure.

Look forward to watching your runs.

Re: Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Hi Wendy,

Gus is 9, and doesn't compete any more. While he could possibly be the happiest and best natured dog you've ever met, unfortunately trials were way too stressful for him. Now that the pressure of trialing is off him, he really is much happier. It was great to bring him to the trial this weekend, and let him enjoy his pals and the smells without the worries. There was a part of me that wished we could just run in one class...that said, it really was a selfish wish...he only would have enjoyed it until I took his collar off.

I'll see if I can find a video of one of our old runs to post...hopefully I can figure out how to do that, as I'm not sure if the formats will be compatible.

Thanks for asking about my Gusto Boy...he really is special and holds a very special place in my heart. He was quite talented, and he taught me a lot about patience and dedication.

Re: Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Becky,

It was great meeting you,as well. Thank you for the kind words. You and Freddy look so smooth, you are laying a great foundation.

I cringe when I first watch the videos of our runs, and yes, most of the time we look a lot slower then it felt when we were running. Usually by the 3rd or 4th viewing I settle down and even the worse runs don't look so bad. VBG The videos can be humbling but are the best learning tool for us. Eric missed our GPX run so I am not sure why Bailey knocked the 2nt bar, but so it goes. Kody runs slower so if we make a mistake I usually know why.

I see you are going to contact Point for DAM Team tomorrow, good luck! It would be so great to get it out of the way early in the year. I just hope I can be on my game after getting up at 4 am, sigh.

Cheers,

Jean

Re: Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Jean,

Nice to see you yesterday....you must have been exhausted when you got home! You were still there when I left at 6pm, and you had several hours to drive!

You and Bailey had a great day...and didn't your team qualify???

Although our team didn't qualify, Freddie did great...4 clean rounds. A good boy, and a great first team experience!

Today we qualified in both Grand Prix and Steeplechase, which was VERY exciting!!! We topped off the day with a Q and 1st place in Advanced Pairs with Freddie's half-brother Jack!

I hope to see you again soon!

Re: Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Becky,

Yes, exhausted but happy. Its so cool to have the DAM Q out of the way as we only have one local trial left in which to Q. I am still baffled with the scoring system so when one of our team was "E" in STD,  with Snooker & Relay left, I didn't think we had a chance. Sure made for an exciting day.

Hugh congrats on GP and Stp! In hindsight, I wish I would have entered but the expense of motel etc when we have local opportunities coming up seemed like a no brainier. Also Olga has given me a lot of insight about not overworking Bailey, not to mention my Senior Citizen body and brain.. Laughing

Cheers,

Jean

Re: Freddie graduates from Starters.....

Hey! Hey! Wait a minute! Older people with BIG dogs are not allowed to complain about overworking their brain, VBG! Body.. maybe, but there shouldn't be any brain activity required to play Agility, ;-)..

CONGRATULATIONS to Bailey on his Team qualifier and to Freddie on his stellar GP and STP runs and Q's!

Way to go guys!

Olga.

Oh yeah, you didn't see the Snooker Course, makes my brain hurt trying to figure those things out, but its starting to make sense when people say, "I am going for 2 6s & a 7 or 1  3 & 2  7s etc.. Knock on wood, Bailey keeps the bars up so I havent had to change plans mid course,

Thanks,

Jean
