Teeter woes

About a week and a half ago Jaldi got scared on a teeter. It was one she had never been on before and I guess it tipped differently than others she is used to. It was an aluminum frame (Max 200, I think). Those are not common around here. Ever since, she does not want to get on any teeter at all not even the one I have at home that she's been doing for more than a year. So I guess back to square one with the teeter. I have managed to lure over the teeter at home, but she is not happy with it and won't go on it without the lure. I watched the video of Freddie in lesson 8, but I don't think I can do that with her yet since she won't volunteer to go up the ramp. She's a little leery of the dogwalk now, too. Last night I put the teeter down to it's lowest setting and tried getting her to bang it. I propped the low end up on a concrete block so the board was approx level and she could easily reach it. She did bang it a few times, but still kind of reluctant. She used to be really enthusiastic about this game. Anyone have any comments on retraining?

Re: Teeter woes
Val ... did you double check to make sure she didn't hurt herself?? I think sometime the little guys can hurt their backs with some types of springy teeters!!

Re: Teeter woes
Hi Elizabeth,
I don't think she hurt herself. If she did, it must be all better now because she is as wild as ever when playing. We did an AKC trial this weekend and she Q'd in both Novice JWW courses. There is no hesitation at any other obstacle either. But if it did hurt that time she went on the icky teeter, she might be remembering that and it could be the reason that she doesn't want to do any teeter.
Thanks for the suggestion. I might try to see if she can piggyback on my other dog's chiro appt. Wouldn't hurt to have her checked over.

Re: Teeter woes
Hi Val,
Bummer about the teeter.
Unfortunately, you now have to start from the very beginning. But the good news is that once Jaldi gets over the scare, she'll go through the steps very quickly, because she already knows all the teeter games, etc.
Guys, please be very observant when it comes to strange equipment. If you encounter a new teeter in a practice setting, always familiarize your dogs with it before requiring to perform it at a dead run. Support the teeter as much as you can at all times with young dogs and note any sighs of fear and/or apprehension.
Retraining teeter is a hard thing for both dog and handler and takes a long time.. but it is not the end of the world, so, Val, don't despair, ;-).

Re: Teeter woes
Yesterday we played with the tippy board and pushing the high end of the teeter down. That was the first time we did anything with teeter training since last weekend. Jaldi is a bit reluctant still. I used the toy on the whip as the reward so she really, really wanted that. And she did make the boards tip to earn it, but I think it was very stressful for her. I have another idea for training which is to let her watch another one of my dogs tip the board and get rewarded. Maybe that will increase her enthusiasm. She's very jealous when I train the other dogs.

Re: Teeter woes
Val,
Whatever you do, please let Jaldi set the pace. It will be quicker in the long run.

Re: Teeter woes
Ok, I know I am obsessing about this. I posted a video of the tippy board. I think Jaldi was quite happy to do it. Tonight we did not even look at a tippy board. We did Hit It board training instead. I also posted a video of that.

Re: Teeter woes
We are now working on a 12" (measured at the fulcrum) teeter. I hold the board up until she gets to the end and then feed as the board drops. I started by lowering slowly and after 3 sessions I'm now pretty much dropping the board. Jaldi is driving all the way to the end. Yeah! Val

We’ve done several more training sessions with the teeter. With the fulcrum at about 12†we did a session at home with a restrained recall. Jaldi was very eager to run across the board to me. Sunday morning we worked on the aluminum frame teeter which is the teeter that she first got worried on. Again the fulcrum was about 12†and I held the board till she was all the way to the end. The first time I lowered it slowly. Each rep I let it drop faster until I was dropping it as soon as she got to the end. All the while she was eating turkey meatball while the board was falling. Today we worked at home and I raised the fulcrum to 14â€. More turkey meatballs and she is cruising across the board eagerly. Next time I’m going to have someone else hold the board while I run with her.
ValRe: Teeter woes
Reluctant to comment on "little guys" training methods. However, curious to why you want to run with her at this point. Wouldn't you want her to be able to  complete the teeter without someone holding the board before upping the ante?
Cheers,
Jean
Re: Teeter woes
I don't want her to become dependent on my position so I want to vary it early on. I already have that problem with the Aframe, so I am trying to avoid it here.

Happy Holidays from the frozen north toronto!!
Val... I think that you should consider having Jaldi be able to do the low board exactly how you want with the progression you told us about for a good long time.... changing things too quickly early on is a risk. once she is completly happy in fact a teeter monster who runs out to it and starts banging it down from the front... then you up the ante. I suspect that the faster you are to train , the slower will be the performance and perhaps the reverse is true !!!

Re: Teeter woes
Hi Elizabeth,
I'm trying not to rush it. Right now Jaldi is running across the board quickly. When I release her she will turn around and run across it the other way unless I do something to make sure she leaves the board and walks around back to the other end. So I think that is showing enthusiasm. I need to get some video.
Stay warm!

Re: descriptive titles
Another example of where a descriptive title would be useful. "Jaldi's Teeter Woes"
There are many places on the site where the only thing listed is the "title" of the post. For example the blocks in the right sidebar and the top level of the forum.
And down the road it makes it easier to do a "search" and actually find what you want.Â
