Freddie's first trial...

Freddie and I were entered in the Contact Point USDAA trial this past weekend. It was a really great experience...lots of things discovered and learned! Eric filmed all 8 of our runs (I think you can view them on his website). I'll tell you, he is one busy guy! I don't know how he keeps it all straight with dogs running in both rings, and I never saw him get a break in the 2 days!
On Saturday we had Starters Standard, Pairs, and Snooker, and we entered Grand Prix and Steeplechase as well. On Sunday we had Starters Standard, Gamblers, and Jumpers.
For our Starters classes, we got a total of 4 Q's: Standard both days , Pairs, and Jumpers! Even though we didn't Q, I was really pleased with Snooker and Gamblers too. We had a knocked bar in #6 in the closing of Snooker, and in Gamblers, I had to "reset" Freddie at the weaves a couple of times when he overran the entry, so we ran out of time and were 2 points short. However, we did the Gamble, which was VERY cool...
In the Grand Prix, I sent Freddie to an offcourse tunnel fairly early on, so we were out. After looking at the video, I see that I didn't have Freddie sit on his teeter or A-frame (oops - Olga mentioned that to me, and I swear, I had no idea!). Other than that, though, a lot of the run was great!
In Steeplechase, I did a better job at not compromising our training...this resulted in some "resets" during the run, but in the end, it was clean, and not a bad time...I was really pleased.
Call me weird, but I was the happiest about:
1) He held every single start line!!! (this has been an issue from the very beginning! I know we will always have to work at this)....
2) He LIKES it....as much in a trial as in training.....if you knew my Gusdog, you'd understand why this is so wonderful...
3) I wasn't a nervous wreck...same disclaimer as #2!!!!!
4) The foundation work held true....exactly as advertised!
5) I am really glad we waited until now to trial. I wanted to feel confident and ready. Olga asked me yesterday if I'd been tempted to trial earlier. Honestly, I can say the answer is no. Although I "thought" about it, I didn't feel ready until now. It was definitely worth the wait.
I'm truly looking forward to the hard work and fun as our training progresses.
Thanks Olga.....from both of us! It was a blast!

Re: Freddie's first trial...
What a wonderful start! You and Freddie had very few wobbles and bobbles. He looks so cute running out there. It is a little like he is saying WOw ok I remember I have to sit now then we can play some more!!! You will have to be careful not to be too awestruck at what you have created!!!
You guys are also very lucky to have someone like Eric out there to video your runs so that you can actually see what you did!! Now who video's Eric when he runs Bree???? ...elizabeth
Re: Freddie's first trial...
Way to go Becky & Freddie! I watched the videos - you guys looked great!
I know exactly how you feel having a dog, for the first time, that is practically pulling you down to get into the ring. I've had two dogs where motivation has been our biggest challenge and I've got to say this is tons of fun!
Congrats!

Re: Freddie's first trial...
Congradulations! You guys look great out there. Nothing weird about being happy about good parts of NQs, unless I am weird as well. LOLÂ
Cheers,
Jean
Re: Freddie's first trial...
Thanks guys! It really was fun!!
For the next little while, I'm planning to enter one trial per month while we continue to work on basics. We're really rolling up our sleeves on 'go on' and back cross work, which will help with many of the bobbles we had at this first trial. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.
Freddie turns 2 tomorrow....wow, the time has flown! To celebrate, we will go for a long walk in the morning, then later take the tunnel, jumps and weaves to the park! And of course, a frisbee session for dessert!!!
Thanks again for the support! You guys are great!
PS - are any of you going to Scottsdale? I may go for the last weekend, to watch the finals.
Re: Freddie's first trial...
Bailey and Kody are going and taking me along to drive and pay the bills.
Olga may kill me for saying this, but there are some things you cant work out except in a trial enviorment so jump in and go for it.
Cheers,
Jean

Re: Freddie's first trial...
Thanks.
I am not sure about the speed challange, I just realized I entered anAKC trial every weekend in Sept.
We only had 1 in Aug. so I got carried away. Did you enter the AKC in Escondido yet. Its only one ring and close to home but may be filled.
Cheers,
Jean
Re: Freddie's first trial...
I'm not sure if I'll do it... if I do it'll only be Sunday since the Speed Challenge is that Saturday. We're doing NADAC the next weekend though and then there are plenty of trials to enter so we'll see what happens... I haven't had the guts to talk to my parents about the one in Escondido yet... :/
Re: Freddie's first trial...
Are you sure you want to spend $30 for one run at the Speed Challenge with a field of Border Collies?
Cheers,
Jean
