Lesson 17 seq 3

Chris was at the gym so unable to video Pippen and Shadow working on seq 3 lesson 17. With Shadow picking her up at the tunnel exit and directing her back up the serp was not a problem - however her speed on exiting a tunnel is not as fast as Pippens.

In my first attempt at this sequence I found myself to far away from the tunnel exit and as a result he blasted up the DW (good boy). The second time I tried just the 2 jumps leading up to the tunnel intending to do just the 1 jump after the tunnel with a thrown ball as a reward. I got in to what I thought was the correct spot but Pippen shot behind me. It seems like I needed to use the same kind a strategy to push on his line to get him to veer off the straight shot out of the tunnel. The next time I stayed near the tunnel exit and sent him to the entrance, took a step back and was moving in the direction I wanted him to go in before he exited. This time he had a nice line out. It took a couple more tries slowing adding speed back in by adding more of the sequence coming in to the tunnel but we finally got the tunnel in and out to my satisfaction. The other problem we had was a very wide turn after the second serp to the final jump. Pippen just did not read my signals and required a fairly loud 'come' come jump'...

I want to work this sequence several more times. for a mini, Pip drives very well out of tunnels but we do have problems making turns out of them. He reallly needs me to be moving in the direction I want him to go to 'get it'. standing at the tunnel mouth just didn't seem to 'say' anything to him!! elizabeth

Re: Lesson 17 seq 3

Hi Elizabeth,

Seems like you and Pippen have put in a good amount of work towards solving Seq.3. And I am glad to hear that you intend to work on this sequence several more times. That's exactly how Lesson 17 exercises are intended to be approached, regardless of problem areas different teams may encounter.

Going on the premise that it is desirable for the dog to drive out of a tunnel without any reservations, which Pippen does beautifully, it would be very beneficial for you to work out a set of signals to clearly communicate to him an acute turn out of a tunnel. It will be a a great asset to your handling and teamwork.

As far as the wide turn to the final jump, it is as big of a challenge in Seq.3, as the turn out of the tunnel we discussed above, ;-).. Let's try to get Chris to help you with the video and go from there.

Olga.
