Going through the box

I set the course up per the map which gave me well over 40' from #4 to #5b. Using the correct position a little back of #4 I was able to get the turn but as I am now behind my dog could not get a send to #5b. #5b is just not very visible especially at the angle as shown on the map. I then moved the jumps so they were no more then 10' apart, a little better but he still took jumps  to the side. I need to break it down but not sure how. Maybe using a toy and run with him in the box? He is baffled by the distance between jumps.

Also on the video you refer to jumps by color, it would be more clear if you used the jump # as we could then look at the map.

the 45' long box

Hi Jean,

Please don't be discouraged by not being able to run your dog through the great length of the box. It is a very difficult thing to do. Even getting your dog to drive through a classic 15'-20' box of four jumps can be a challenge.

In order to break it down, you may want to try setting up a straight line of jumps with a comfortable spacing and running that line. Then flank your line of jumps with more jumps, thus making a box. Run your straight line again. If the dog starts taking jumps to the side, move them futher away from the straight line of jumps. When successful, remove one jump of the straightaway,, then remove another one,, until only the first and the last jumps remain.

Using a toy is a great idea, I am always for using a toy. Please don't forget though that the objective is to teach the dog to commit to the 5b jump as early as possible and drive through the box, not run alongside you.

I am afraid I won't be able to switch to jump numbers, I don't use numbers. Sorry for the inconvenience, but I am sure that it won't be a big deal to get used to referencing my colors and names of the jumps to the numbers on the course map.

Thanks, the toy idea would be counter productive in this case. Good news is I noticed his eyes...hey mom what do you want me to take??

Cheers,
