Lesson 18 # 3 Bailey & Kody

addictedtolabs's picture
Thank goodness I have forgiving labs. This was a neat way to practice getting in the right position....moving backwards and sending. On my need to practice list, getting Bailey into the correct side of a tunnel..cant figure out why he kept going to the left when I am trying to pull to the right; getting Kody to charge ahead in the poles so I can get in position to FC out of the tunnel. I very seldom FC Bailey into the poles but he seem determined to not let me get in his way. VBG PS My tunnels are 15' not 20' which makes it a little more difficult. Cheers, Jean

Re: Lesson 18 # 3 Bailey & Kody

Hey Jean! my tunnels are 15 foot as well. It does make it a bit harder. I was thinking of moving the tunnel a little further away to compensate.... I suppose I will have to put a 20' tunnel on my 'wish' list!! elizabeth

Jean,

I are becoming quite an ace of front crosses, good job! Especially your FX before the poles is looking really timely with both dogs. Nice to see.

As far as the difficulty you have experienced getting the correct tunnel entry, there are a couple reasons. First, as you note yourself, you are "pulling" the dog to the correct entry. Pulling is always harder then pushing or showing the line. Since there is no way to push in this transition, the best thing to do it accelerate towards the intended tunnel entrance and keep running.. all the way. Not in the general direction, but to the tunnel entrance, as if you are going to take it yourself, ;-)! Your decisive movement will get and keep the dog's attention until he is safely in front of the correct tunnels entrance.. And to buy more insurance, use your claw hand while running to the tunnel.

Tunnel length:: Actually, the straight tunnel in the exercise is a 15' tunnel. The other one is about 18', as I scrunch the ends to secure the tunnel better..

It's good to have a 20' tunnel though to practice your timing on a longer tunnel vs. a shorter one.

Olga.

Re: Lesson 18 # 3 Bailey & Kody

Will do...I kept looking at the angle over the jumps and his path should have had him looking at the right side of the tunnel. I tried running towards the jump to the right of the tunnel but I didnt have enough space to turn sharp enough. I will give the claw a shot.. Another issue is Bailey is ahead of me so I need to run faster Jean

Run faster! Ahh.. Can you? Running faster is always the best solution. ;-).. That's what Tim does..

But if your running is still not fast enough.. then leadout further and run with more intent..

Re: Lesson 18 # 3 Bailey & Kody

Cant lead out mid course,or run as fast as Tim, but I am starting to understand the concept of "intent". Like my friend Paul Young, who can hardly walk, does with his little lab, Bit. Jean

Right on, Jean! Paul is a true inspiration. You can run plenty quick and your start line is fine.. so once you add intent.. no tunnel entrance discrimination will stop you guys! Olga.
