Lesson 7 - Imaginary Obstacle

Eric Larson's picture

This Agility Dynamite video Lesson is a short discussion about how to handle the transistion from the serpentine to the far out wing jump.

The solution, imagine that there is another jump between the two. And it becomes a pinwheel. So there is your solution.

Re: Lesson 7 - Imaginary Obstacle

Hi Olga...After you put the bar down and set it up as an "imaginary" jump...I was thinking, what would be the advantages and disadvantages of front crosses afer the blue jump(at the end of the serpentine) before heading to the wing? Like handling it as if that jump was there and you wanted to handle on the inside of a 3 jumps circle/pinwheel. If you can get there in time, would it cut off time and be easier for the dog to read? Thanks. =)

Re: Lesson 7 - Imaginary Obstacle

Hi Helen,

You could make a front cross there IF you could get there that is, ;-)..

There are no advantages or disadvantages. The reason you feel that a front cross is going to be easier for your dog to read is because you and your dog have mastered the front cross inside a pinwheel and can do it well. Now it's time to tackle the pinwheel with the rear cross, ;-)..

The way the exercise is set up, it shouldn't be easy to get there..

Say, the dog is speedy, but you are yet speedier.. you still have to learn to handle such a transition with a rear cross, in case your dog surprises you with even more speed or you for some reason or other can't get to your front cross.

It's a skill every handler needs to learn.

In your lessons you will find sequences where I don't ask for specific handling.. those sequences are for finding the best handling techniques for each team.

However, when you hear me specifically requesting certain handling, please give it a shot, even if you think that a different cross, etc. would get you through the sequence better. Knowing more then one way to execute a transition is going to make you a better handler and add more fun for your dog.

If for some reason a certain technique feels absolutely alien/impossible for you and your dog to try and learn, don't worry.. just skip it.. make a note to come back and try it later in the game.

Happy learning!

Olga.
