Wisp A frame practice sept 18 07

wisp is still hitting the up ramp on the A frame harder than I would like. I have been trying to get her to take a 'softer / quieter' approach' but we are not there yet. I think she is better going up the side with the hoop. So perhaps 1 solution would be to try 2 hoops and drop the height back down to perhaps 5'. Any other ideas to try to help her find the most comfortable ascent?? I am not really worried about her hitting the down contact - but she could hurt herself if she slams into the a frame on the way up!

Elizabeth,

I see what you mean.. Wisp does hit the AF way too hard on the uptake..

By all means, please lower the height at least to 5' if not lower and see the result..

There are a few reasons that dogs hit the up of the AF hard: a.) young dogs apply too much effort because they don't know how much effort is really enough to climb it.. and, if not addressed, such performance becomes a habit; b.) dogs hit the AF hard because they like doing it; c.) dogs hit the AF hard to be able to generate enough momentum to perform the leap over the apex (which I don't advocate at all!).. ; d.) but all the above reasons stem from the same thing: the dog was not taught not to charge the obstacles, AF included, but accelerate towards them smoothly..

What to do? Put two hoops on the ground on the way to the AF and ask the dog to run through them then take the AF. Though you will have to "play" with the positioning of the hoops, ballpark, the hoop closest to the AF should be about 5'-3' away and the other one maybe 15' from the 1st one..

See what happens..

Olga.

I'll drop the frame and start with those hoop positions and video what happens.  I'll have to check back in my records but I think at 5ft apex she only touched the a frame twice once in the up and the other in the down.  Not sure I want that either!  elizabeth
