Wisp Serp's and DW

Again with the exception of a couple of play and swim breaks and a couple of reset the bars and the dog walk hoops, this was the remainder of Wisp's training session today sept 11 07. We took advantage of the overcast and the fact that the temps were in the low 90's .... at last!

I started the serp work with the jumps angled and straigtened them on each pass. when we disconnected I tried to isolate that part and reward the correct intent regardless of bars. I think that each time I work this exercise it is becoming clearer to her what I want or I am getting better at communicating it. I did notice that when I used the 'precue ie the recall hand - but facing in the direction of motion, that she picked up the change of direction more readily. Neither of us is very facile with this manoever yet!

The running dog walk is coming along nicely I think. I am trying to give her information concerning what to do next on the ascent ramp so that she is forwarned. Actually at the speed she is running the is no time eg I need to be saying go on over (indicating the jump after the dog walk)  as she is heading to the DW!! ....elizabeth

Re: Wisp Serp's and DW

Holy crap that dog is fast!

Re: Wisp Serp's and DW

She keeps me on my toes ..... it is actually a little scarey - she seems to have an extra gear that kicks in when she realizes what I am asking for! ...elizabeth

Re: Wisp Serp's and DW

I'm glad I run my BC at 26"!!!! So you won't be in my class! :) !!!!

Re: Wisp Serp's and DW

....well.... I actually haven't decided what height to run her atUndecided ... but I am starting to lean towards running at 26" all around!.....elizabeth

Katie,

You crack me up, ;-)!

P.S.: What happened to your avatar?

Re: Wisp Serp's and DW

Elizabeth,

I am glad to see and read that you are giving the 'precue ie the recall hand' a shake, ;-).. Dogs do like to know ahead of time where they are suposed to go. Very nice serpentine training session.

If I may suggest one more thing to enhance the serpentine skill building.. please reward the dog (with food or tug toy) for coming over the jump in responce to your recall hand signal. Obviously, the reward should be given out of the Recall hand, ;-).. By doing this you will bring the dog's attention to the event of your Recall hand signal and build the value of paying attention to it. Such reinforcement pays off handsomely and allows for a shortcut in training, i.e.: once the dog learns to read and react to your hand signals, you don't need to go through a zillion permutations of angling jumps and making patterns easier to increase/maintain a reasonable sucess rate.. In fact, a dog that knows the hand signals can read intricate jumping sequences right off the bat..

Wisp's DW is looking good. I can't tell from the far awat angle in the video, what exactly happens on the down ramp, but she surely is running fast and happy.. which are the only two things we need at this point. Please don't worry about "what happens after the DW" for now.. just let her run it and exit straight.

Olga.

Re: Wisp Serp's and DW

I usualy have her running with wet feet so I can see what happens on the contacts.  She is hitting them both up and dog and regulalrly in the same place sometimes both front and rear so I am happy with that.  We have started working slight turns to either the far or near side of a tunnel set back about 25 feet.  I will try to get some video of that tonight or tomorrow.    We are doing that in concert with 'out jump - come jump for jumps further away from my position or closer to my position.  She is taking the directions easily but I only do a couple at a time.

I will also video my calling to hand practice....elizabethÂ
